The MIL immersion mill is a pilot plant equipment, specially designed for wet grinding processes using microspheres and requiring prior dispersion of the raw materials. It is a versatile mill, as it can carry out two different treatments: grinding and emulsion/suspension, thanks to the possibility of easily interchanging the process axes (grinding basket and high shear cowles disc), which means a significant cost reduction for I+D laboratories.
As a wet grinding unit, it has a sieve basket in which the microspheres are placed. The grinding process takes place because the product is trapped between the spheres as they impact against each other and is refined. To ensure that the product moves inside the basket, blades are installed in the lower part of the basket to force the material to re-circulate through the basket.
The particular design of the equipment allows a quick exchange and cleaning of the beads, especially useful in the colour changes of the materials, also, as no transfer pumps are needed, the general cleaning of the MIL is easier and quicker than in other liquid phase milling systems.
